Presented by Janet Falk, Falk Communications & Research and Stephanie J. Rodin, Esq. Rodin Legal, P.C.

Networking is one of the most important ways to grow your practice throughout your career, but many attorneys struggle to make the most of networking events. In addition, the types of often brief conversations that characterize networking interactions can lend themselves to ethical quandaries. In this program, Public Relations professional Janet Falk and attorney Stephanie Rodin will address the best practices of successful networking and guide you to stay within the bounds of the Rules of Professional Conduct.

Attorneys will learn why they should attend events hosted by business and professional organizations whose members are in their target markets, and how to make the most of their attendance. Viewers will learn to put themselves in the role of “curator of resources” and become a business matchmaker, introducing new contacts to those in the attorney’s own network. The program will also provide a step-by-step guide to introducing yourself to the leaders of a host organization, whose members are likely referral sources and prospective clients, as well as tips on creating a memorable elevator pitch. Finally, viewers will prepare to ask problem and solution questions that will prompt new contacts to describe their business successes and ideal clients. All of this will be framed within the context of the model rules of professional responsibility, so attorneys can walk away confident that they can ethically put networking to work.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the ethical issues involved in networking
  • Grasp the ethical boundaries of referrals, solicitation, and recommendations
  • Observe appropriate references to practice, specialty, and expertise
  • Create a memorable elevator pitch that describes your practice
  • Develop a system for preparation, attendance, and follow-up at networking events

About the presenters:

Janet Falk is a communications professional with more than 25 years experience in-house and at public relations agencies. Prior to launching Falk Communications and Research in 2009, she served as Media Relations Counsel for more than 350 attorneys in the Corporate & Securities, Private Equity, Financial Industry, Bankruptcy, Securities Litigation and New York Commercial Litigation practice groups at Reed Smith LLP. Janet arranged for these attorneys to speak on timely legal and business issues with reporters at The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Law Journal, CNBC and Time magazine, among other top-tier legal, business and trade media. These interviews led to quotes in front-page articles and other news stories, which generated new clients for the law firm, resulting in more than a million dollars in new business.

Earlier in her career, Janet worked in Public Relations and Marketing Communications for Wall Street firms, including Deutsche Bank, Smith Barney and Bear Stearns, in various market sectors (private equity, investment banking, equity research, fixed income and securities clearing). In addition to managing press relations, she composed articles, conference presentations and speeches for senior executives, as well as digital content. Janet has a Ph.D. in Spanish Literature and speaks Spanish and French

Stephanie J. Rodin, Esq. is the founder and principal of Rodin Legal, P.C. and has been practicing law since 1998, with a majority of that time assisting the healthcare professional. Working closely with various physicians and dentists, Ms. Rodin recognized the amount of effort it takes to ensure that office management runs smoothly, so that they can concentrate on providing the best care for their patients.  It’s this understanding that is the core of her practice.

Ms. Rodin began her legal career in commercial litigation, where she gained experience and knowledge in Corporate Law.  Thereafter, she became an Associate with a firm concentrating in plaintiff medical and dental malpractice matters.  She appeared in the Supreme Courts within all the New York City Counties, in addition to Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester Counties.  Ms. Rodin handled all aspects of cases, from client intake to trials, including all Court conferences, depositions, settlement conferences and jury selections. After gaining this experience, she then began to focus her career on representing healthcare professionals in malpractice actions.

Ms. Rodin received her J.D. from New England School of Law in Boston, Massachusetts.  Prior to this, she received a B.S. in Accounting from New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business.
