“You’re a lawyer, right?” Seemingly innocuous words, but when said at a cocktail party, family gathering, or even in a hallway or elevator at the courthouse, they pose a genuine challenge, don’t they? If a lawyer is not careful in responding, he or she may inadvertently create a professional relationship without intending to do so—leaving the lawyer potentially exposed to a malpractice claim.
This new live, interactive workshop is designed to help lawyers be more alert to the vulnerabilities they may face in various non-office settings, and to equip them with best practices for defining their roles up front, and setting clear boundaries with the person seeking advice.

Michael Kahn, with his business partner Chris Osborn, began providing their CLE workshops on ethics, professional responsibility, diversity and inclusion and mental health/substance abuse awareness in 2007. Since January 2010, their workshops have been enjoyed by hundreds of participants throughout the US, as well as Australia and Canada. In August 2012, their program, “Practicing Dirt Law and Keeping Your Nose Clean”- Stress and Ethical Decision-Making for Real Estate Attorneys, received an Award of Outstanding Achievement in Programming from ACLEA, the Association for Continuing Legal Education Professionals.
Michael holds a J.D. from the Dickinson School of Law, and practiced law with the Attorney General’s Office for the State of New Jersey for 6 years. Although he left the practice of law in 1991, his work thereafter has kept him involved in the lives of lawyers in various capacities. Following a stint as Assistant Director of Career Services with the Tulane University School of Law, Michael obtained his M. Ed. in Counseling from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro in 1994, and shortly thereafter became a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of North Carolina. Michael’s areas of focus in his psychotherapy practice have included anxiety, depression, grief/loss, career satisfaction, and men's issues. In 2012, he relocated to Oregon, where, in addition to continuing his speaking career, he served as an Adjunct Professor at the Lewis & Clark Graduate School of Education & Counseling. He currently resides in Vancouver, BC, where he facilitates grief groups for lawyers. He continues to present training seminars and workshops on ethics, grief, wellness, diversity and inclusion, and other topics for lawyers and mental health professionals throughout the U.S. and abroad, including for the U.S. military in Germany and Japan.

Bonnie J. Paskvan recently joined Calista Corporation, an Alaska regional native corporation, as its General Counsel. In that capacity, Bonnie is responsible for ensuring that the wide breadth of legal and compliance needs are met for Calista and its more than 35 subsidiaries and joint ventures. Prior to Calista, Bonnie served as Vice President and Senior Legal Counsel for The Alaska Wireless Network, LLC, and in-house Corporate Counsel for GCI and its subsidiaries forbore than a decade. Bonnie was an associate then shareholder at Hartig, Rhodes, Norman, Mahoney and Edwards, P.C., and previously an associate at Burr, Pease and Kurtz, P.C. and Riordan & McKinzie in Los Angeles, CA. Bonnie earned her Bachelor of Arts in International Relations with distinction from Stanford University and her J.D. from Stanford Law School. During her three years at Stanford Law School, she served as associate editor for the Stanford Law Review. She serves as Co-Chair for the Alaska Bar Association’s Corporate Counsel Section, and also serves on the Board for the Anchorage Association of Women Lawyers. Ms. Paskvan is the 1981 Truman Scholar for Alaska.

Faith Rose earned her Juris Doctorate degree, with distinction, Order of the Coif (top 10% of class) from University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento. She is licensed to practice in Alaska, California and Florida. She also holds a B.A., with honors, from the University of California at Santa Cruz, major in Art History, minor in Music.
Faith joined the Doyon Legal Department in 2010 after working for twenty years as a commercial and employment law attorney, both in private practice and as Sr. Corporate Staff Attorney for Arctic Slope Regional Corporation (5 years in Barrow, n/k/a Utqiagvik, on the North Slope of Alaska). When not working as an attorney, Faith is a professional artist at The Greater Light Art Studio, working in stained glass, beadwork, and painting portraits and landscapes in acrylics. She sells her art work in local galleries and for charity auction.
